The building and construction department comprises highly motivated professionals who are not only trained in the law but have also qualified and worked in related technical fields. Our client base is wide and varied as we advise and act for all parties involved in the construction industry. In addition to building contractors, sub-contractors and suppliers, our lawyers have acted for developers, management corporations, home owners, insurers, banks, loss adjusters and consultants such as architects, engineers, quantity surveyors, building surveyors, landscape designers and interior designers.

Our ability to comprehend the problems and technicalities faced by the industry and to understand construction practices enables us to work closely and effectively with all clients. More importantly, our understanding of such practices enables us to assist our clients make speedy decisions and find expeditious solutions to their problems.

The Department handles a wide range of contentious and non-contentious matters. In the contentious arena, our lawyers handle disputes concerning a variety of claims. These include claims for payment, defective works, damages for delay and prolongation, insurance claims and numerous other legal issues. Our lawyers also handle tortious claims such as professional negligence claims.

Such contentious matters are resolved through various dispute resolution procedures. In this respect, we have experience in representing clients in the courts of law and at both, domestic and international arbitrations. Our philosophy however, is always to seek the most beneficial and practical solution that meets our clients' needs. This often means assisting our clients to resolve disputes through alternative dispute resolution procedures such as mediation, conciliation, negotiation, expert determination and adjudication under the Building Construction Industry Security of Payment Act 2004.

On the non-contentious front, we provide comprehensive advice to our clients throughout the construction process - from conceptualization of a project, to the pre-tender stage, throughout the construction period and beyond.

We have experience in drafting and advising on various standard and non-standard forms of construction contracts, specialist sub-contracts, procurement contracts, supply and advance purchase contracts, management contracts, various types of consultancy agreements and employment contracts. We also draft, review and advise on other documentation commonly encountered in the building and construction industry. These include letters of award, performance bonds, warranties, indemnities, guarantees, insurance policies and deeds of assignment.

In addition to rendering mainstream advice relating to the rights and obligations of parties under the various forms of building or consultancy contracts, we also advise on other legal areas related to the construction industry. These include advice on tortious issues, the law of agency, third party claims, insurance law, insolvency law, employment law and the law on intellectual property rights.
